Why I Teach Arranging

When I joined band during my junior year of high school, I knew pretty early on that I wanted to write music for marching bands and indoor drumlines. I was fortunate to have teachers and designers in my life, including Dustin Schulz, Jeff Ausdemore, and Allen Joanis, who helped me understand what was possible compositionally.

When I first started trying to write music, there was very little information available online, so I had to piece together whatever I could find. I learned through scores, videos, trial and error, film composer interviews, DAW tutorials, VST walkthroughs, and anything else that helped me better understand the writing process. Even now, a lot of my growth still comes from the internet, experimentation, revision, and trial and error.

Originally, I had no intention of teaching others how to compose or arrange, but over time, it became clear that many people are searching for ways to improve their writing in the same way I was, and still am. I know what it feels like to want to get better without having a clear path forward.

I do not claim to have all the answers, and I do not think there is only one correct way to write. I do, however, care about helping people improve in ways that were not available to me when I started.
